arrow Disabilities Defined

In Singapore, people with disabilities are classified under four broad categories of disabilities - sensory disabilities (hearing and visual impairment), intellectual disabilities (with IQ of 70 and below), physical disabilities (e.g. amputee, polio) and other developmental disorders (e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder).

Jobs-ODF shall hence provide job assistance services to any jobseeker who falls strictly under any of the abovementioned categories.

 SENSORY DISABILITIES

Hearing Impairment

  • Normal Hearing = 0 decibels (dB) to 15 dB
  • Hearing Loss = > 15 d
  • Determined typically by an audiogram

Visual Impairment

  • Blindness - < 3/60 or corresponding visual field loss in the better eye with best possible correction
  • Low Vision - < 6/18, but equal or better than 3/60 in the better eye with best possible correction

 INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

Moderate to Severe Intellectual Disabilities

  • Persons with Intellectual Quotient (IQ) of below 50
  • A test administered is typically the Wechsler

Mild Intellectual Disabilities

  • Persons with IQ level between 50-70

 PHYSICAL DISABILITIES

Physical Disabilities

  • A person with a physical disability is constrained by the limitations of his physical ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADL) independently.
  • Onset of a physical disability could be through congenital/hereditary causes, accident, infections and other medical conditions.

Celebral Palsy and Muscular Dystrophy

  • Doctors will typically perform musculo-skeletal tests and ask questions on the individual's history before certifying cerebral palsy.
  • For muscular dystrophy, the diagnosis is made by a certified medical professional - typically a consultant neurologist.

 OTHER DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
  Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)
  • A paediatrician, child psychologist or child psychiatrist can make a diagnosis.
  • The Child Development Unit (CDU) typically uses the Connor's Test or the Vanderbilt Test, before diagnosing ADHD.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

  • Diagnosis on ASD requires a team of trained professionals.
  • The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) is typically administered by the psychologist, in addition to comprehensive parents' interviews and IQ tests before a diagnosis of ASD is made.
